What are common symptoms of TMJ?
TMJ is usually self-diagnosable, and one of the most common ways patients realize that they have temporomandibular joint disorder is because they have pain and soreness that emanates from their jaw and extends to other parts of the face, neck, and ears. TMJ symptoms include, but are not limited to:
- Pain in the Jaw, Face, and Ears
- Jaw Clicking & Popping
- Stiff or Sore Jaw Muscles
- Frequent Headaches
- Difficulty Chewing
- Locking of the Jaw Joint
What causes TMJ?
The factors that cause TMJ can vary from patient to patient, and while jaw injuries can’t be reversed, TMJ symptoms can sometimes be reduced through stress management and relaxation techniques if stress is the cause. We also recommend trying different jaw exercises, anti-inflammatory pain relievers, or muscle relaxants in more severe cases. TMJ symptoms can be caused by:
- Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
- Jaw Injuries
- Stress & Anxiety
- Poor Posture/Alignment
- Chewing Gum Frequently
Is TMJ Curable?
For some patients, TMJ symptoms only occur when the patient is experiencing an increased amount of stress or anxiety, and their pain goes away when stress is reduced. Other patients experience chronic TMJ symptoms regardless of what they do. If you find yourself experiencing jaw pain either on and off or every single day, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our team for a custom oral appliance. Precision Facial Esthetics offers nightguards that patients can wear while asleep to prevent bruxism and teeth clenching. Our oral appliances are custom made to fit comfortably, reduce pressure on the jaw joints, and protect the teeth from damaging each other.
